Camera has become omni present and we wish it was omni potent. In the past one camera in a family was plenty. Thanks to the digital technology, we have camera in nearly every smartphone. Every other laptop has built in camera. With small cameras like pin holes avail in phones buying a camera has to be an exercise where we are trying to buy a special gadget to go beyond the phone camera.
Top of the line, Digital SLR cameras like Canon EOS 1D, 5D, 7D cost staring from $1500 upwards and can meet needs of professionals. Canon Rebel and DSLR cameras made by Nikon, Sony and others have specifications which would far exceed the needs of amateurs. The only downside of this class of cameras is need for replacing the lens to suit the requirements of photography that one may like. You may need several lens to cover for every situation. A good lens can cost quite a bit, even $1000.
Depending upon the needs of photography, the time we want to devote and the kind of budget we have, would go on to influence the choice or decision. In my experience, working with different lens was a negative factor.
Recently, I came across Panasonic FZ150 which is being branded as a “bridge” camera. In layman’s terms, it has 24x zoom, shoots 1080p video, can shoot 12fps of still photos or 3D images and view on your 3D capable TV. The best thing is that it has Leica lens (which is one of very best in the industry), its zoom translates to 25-600mm and is built in. The camera costs very reasonable and is neither too heavy nor bulky. I was very impressed by the results. There are cameras made by Canon and Nikon which claim to match some of the features but according to experts, Panasonic FZ150 is the best in this category. The comparison drawn by dpreview is more than impressive.
In my view, except for those who are professionals or want to be, this camera might be the gadget as a special camera.
